Urban Exotic Garden
Streatham, South West London
The brief for this garden design was to create a stylish entertaining space displaying exotic and architectural planting. Strong masculine materials were chosen for the hard landscaping, black decking and grey concrete slabs provide an effective contrast to the lush planting.
To the left of the garden, a bog bed housing a substantial Gunnera manicata was constructed with recycled railway sleepers.
To the rear of the garden, a wall of red stemmed bamboo Fragesia ‘Jiuzhaigou’ was planted, with integrated mood lighting. The bamboo also serves as an effective noise barrier from the nearby railway.
To the right of the garden, the planting verges on the Mediterranean with many silver/grey leaved plants offset by burgundy leaved shrubs and perennials.
The dining area flower bed was planted up with the client’s favourite herbs, nestled amongst Euphorbia’s and Hydrangeas, releasing invigorating fragrances on summer days.
As this garden provides a space for day and night entertainment, mood lighting was installed throughout, adding a dramatic effect to tree and leaf forms.
